    • ESOL [[#|Conference Call Minutes]] 3:30 -4:28PMKatya, Shirley, Cathy and Ellen were in attendance.1. Ellen talked with Shirley and Cathy about their lesson sharing ideas for the May 3rd conference. Shirley will share about a research paper lesson, Bobbi will share about a Technology Integration lesson she tried. Cathy will share her experiences learning PowerPoint via the tutorials.2. Katya shared about Chapter 9 readings-Technology Integration in the ESL classroom and we all agreed to bring website resources to share at the conference. We discussed the possibility of getting a tech request approval at each site for an ESL group email so ESL students could interact with other ESL students in the state while at the ABLE centers. 3. We had a group discussion on next year's study circle goals with the notion of proposing a state-wide thematic group project via email communications. Katy will share more about the proposal on the evening of the 3rd.Shirley added that we must remember to provide good basic ESL strategies and PD for teachers who are teachingbeginners. Ellen will do a PP on BEst practices for beginners early on on in the Study Circle next year. 4. Before the meeting adjourned, Ellen agreed to contact Carol re: having a labtop on site for the evening conference,to refine the Tues. night agenda to include the names of teachers presenting and the topc they will share.5. ESL Conference Announcement
      • Dear ESOL Study Circle Members:We have a date for our May ESOL conference. It will be held May 3/4: Tues. evening 6:30-8:00 PM and all day Helena. Tuesday night will be a sharing of the lessons learned from our Study Circle and the Teaching Multilevel ESL book.We are inviting interested study circle participants to present their favorite chapter or strategy from the book and share new insights and successes for 10-15 minutes each. Katya will then follow up with a PP on student projects and technology integrated application of the multi-Level Instructional book's strategies. Please email us this week if you are interested in presenting!On Wednesday, May 4, a professional ESOL Lincs trainer from Minnesota will present two half day sectionals. One sectional will focus on Pronunciation instruction, and the other will promote ESOL Work Force Skills instruction.We are excited to meet again and grow in our ESL competencies! Even if you choose not to present, we would appreciate you taking a moment to write down and send us three things you have learned from the readings or study circle conversation! January ESOL Phone Conference Minutes
3:30-4:30 PM
      • 1. Katya shared on both Chapter 5 readings, "Activities for the Whole Class," and the 7 minute video clip about technology infused project based learning. She discussed how she integrated many of the approaches presented in the Chapter 5 readings into the PowerPoint group projects. Strategies she shared included using a Flip camera to record the students as they present their projects back to the class. She uses the video footage for immediate feedback once the student has completed his/her presentation. The group watches the recorded presentation and offers constructive feedback. Katya shared that students often request to retape segments where they made mistakes so they get immediate feedback and practice in areas of need. Katya also shared how she integrates pictures and video clips into her Language Experience Approach (LEA) projects. We discussed how group projects support the multi level classroom and how group roles must be taught and defined as part of the process to ensure student success.
      • 2. Ellen followed up with a small group discussion about some of the strategies mentioned in Chapter 5. Shirley shared that she uses many of the strategies mentioned in the book in her class. All participants agreed that although Chapter 5 covered many of the strategies participants were familiar with, it was beneficial to have them listed and presented all in one chapter.

NCEE Studies A Reading Intervention for Adult ESL LearnersAdult ESL programs are designed to assist students in their efforts to acquire literacy and language skills by providing instruction through local education agencies, community colleges, and community-based organizations. The content of instruction within ESL classes varies widely and there is little rigorous research that identifies effective instruction.The report, *The Impact of a Reading Intervention for Low-Literate Adult ESL Learners*, uses data collected from 1,137 adult ESL learners in two cohorts across ten sites in four states. Adult ESL teachers and learners were assigned by lottery to either classrooms using the basal reader Sam and Pat, Volume I , or classrooms using the site’s usual curriculum.Because learners often do not consistently attend adult ESL programs over an extended period of time, English language and reading outcomes were assessed at the beginning and end of one semester for both cohorts of students. Classroom instruction was measured via classroom observations conducted one time in each classroom.Key findings include:• More reading instruction was observed in Sam and Pat classes, while more English language instruction was observed in control classes.• Although students in both groups of classes made gains in reading and English language skills, no differences in reading and English language outcomes were found between students in the Sam and Pat group and students in the control group.• There were no impacts of Sam and Pat on reading and English language outcomes for five of six subgroups examined: learners whose native language is based upon a non-Roman alphabet, native Spanish speakers, learners with relatively higher levels of literacy at the start of the study, learners from the first study cohort, and learners from the second study cohort.• For learners with relatively lower levels of literacy at the start of the study, there was some suggestive evidence of a positive impact on reading outcomes. Among this subset of learners, Sam and Pat group students scored higher on the Woodcock Johnson word attack (decoding) assessment than control group students. The effect size (.16) is estimated to be equivalent to approximately 1 1/2 to 2 months of growth, based upon norms provided by the test publisher.     • December 13, 2010 ESOL PD Conference Call Minutes1. Katya opened the conference call by discussing how technology could be integrated to enhance the learning modeled in the sample lesson in Chapter 10. 2. Katya then shared the Project Based Learning Power Points that her ESL students developed and presented on the topic of Thanksgiving.3. Katya shared her steps for lesson presentation which included the following:*Topic Introduction/Objectives/ Purpose * Modeling of project process and product via PowerPoint technology and 'Paintbrush' * Text work for vocabulary development, pronunciation practice utilizing the website ( * Mixed level student pairing and project time ---Student make a time line and utilize text to develop their own PowerPoint projects * Instructor floats and supports both technology skill development and writing process/editing with pairings *Students present their PowerPoint projects back to the main group *Katya videotapes student presentations and students watch themselves on tape to self correct and observe their language production. * Generative discussion on vocabulary, grammar, and usage topics evolve organically in the process * Closure discussion for the project4. Shirley shared how she has started integrating computer usage with ESOL students in their writing and integrating Mavis Beacon into the class to support employment skills development.5. Ellen shared the benefits of authentic assessment and referenced the Chapter 2 reading on Assessment, the CAELA surveys, questionnaires and check off lists that had been emailed out to participants. 6. Ellen then discussed the Chapter 10 Sample lesson readings and opened the floor up for discussion. 7. Jacqueline shared that covering the 4 aspects of language: listening speaking, reading and writing, are often integrated best into a week long instructional plan instead of trying to cram them all into each lesson. The ever pressing time constraints for prep and assessment were discussed as well by the group. Everyone acknowledged that taking small steps in trying new approaches was the best way to start due to the reality of the instructional day.8. Closure: The conference call was brought to closure by participants and facilitators who all acknowledged that the PD reading and shared time to discuss the possibilities and issues specific to ESOL instruction was helpful in cultivating new instructional strategies.9.Phone conference adjourned at 4:30 PM

    • Dear friends,These power points were part of the Thanksgiving project developed in Great Falls ESOL classes. (see above) The videos I was not able to attach due to the sizes of the files. Tomorrow, I can play on my computer one of the videos and put my phone on the speakers so you can at least, listen what the student said about the use of power point as a tool to improve the English Language. I will explain the steps of the project and how did we get to the day of the individual presentations. I wish I could send the videos.     • Thank you for sharing your time and input at our November Study Circle! For those of you who were not able to attend, Katya shared information on PowerPoint as a tool for both instructors and ESL students in a project based leaning setting around the theme of "Culture." The informal language acquisition that is facilitated by students working collaboratively on PowerPoint projects is very powerful. In lieu of the Chapter Summary PowerPoint homework that Katya suggested in October, she encouraged interested teachers to use the PowerPoint tutorials with their more advanced ESL students to have the students create a thematic holiday PowerPoint that presents Thanksgiving, Christmas, or perhaps a holiday from their cultures that is important to them. By placing the assignment in the hands of the students, there is less "teacher prep - time" required, and many of the objectives in curriculum development identified in Chapter 2 will be accomplished. In the second half of the Study Circle time, Ellen facilitated a group discussion about the Chapter 2 readings. Our next scheduled meeting will be 3:30 pm on December 13th. Please find attached the Chapter 10 readings on Sample Lessons. Ellen will send additional assessment templates, optional Ch 3 -professional reading, and general instructional handouts that you may want to add to your resource files. Please, notice that the files were sent in two formats; 2003 and 2007, so you can open the format that you have in your computer. The PD homework piece is finishing the last three slides of the Chapter 1, The Multi Level Class. By viewing the first Power Point Tutorial and reading the last section of Chapter 1, you can create the last three slides for Chapter One that were sent as a PP with the agenda. Ellen can resend the Ch. 1 PowerPoint template as well as the Chapter 1 Readings again this afternoon, just in case anyone has "lost them."
